The figure is only a fraction of the one in two of the population who inhaled regularly when smoking reached its peak popularity in the 1950s. But while seven out of 10 of today’s smokers want to stop, the rate of decline has flattened in the past decade, revealing a core of hardened smokers who cannot or will not quit.
