The Appeal of Islam…

Television Review - ‘New Muslim Cool’ - On PBS, Spiritual Journey of Dealer Turned Rapper

“New Muslim Cool,” a film by Jennifer Maytorena Taylor, is not a documentary about Muslim style, Muslim clubs or Muslim power cliques rising out of New York or Los Angeles as an emerging entertainment force. Aesthetically, the film, to be shown Tuesday as part of the “P.O.V.” series on PBS, has no investment in cool at all. Shot primarily in grim quarters of Pittsburgh, it chronicles the life of a young religious convert to quietly explore the porousness of cultural identity and the immense challenges presented to a man dramatically trying to reinvent himself in the face, essentially, of sanctioned prejudices.

Is it really just Christian vs Muslim?
Suicide bombing gravely injures Kremlin-backed Ingushetia president

Russia’s efforts to crush a growing Islamist insurgency across its southern borders suffered a stinging setback today when a suicide bomber gravely injured the president of Ingushetia.
Yunus-bek Yevkurov was wounded when a car packed with explosives was detonated as his convoy drove past. Two bodyguards, including his driver, were killed. The president’s brother and head of security were also badly hurt.
The assassination attempt underscores Moscow’s failure to pacify the troubled Muslim republics of the North Caucasus. The region, already the scene of two Kremlin wars in Chechnya, is now in the grip of a major insurgency by Islamist rebels.
Russia’s president, Dmitry Medvedev, promised harsh measures against those responsible. He dubbed them “bandits”, while the Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin, called them “Nazis”. But there is little sense that the Kremlin has a clear strategy for dealing with the crisis.

Can you tell me what I can wear?
Sarkozy stirs French burka debate

Since this was the first time in almost one and a half centuries that a French president had been allowed to address parliament, President Nicolas Sarkozy’s speech was already on course to ruffle a few feathers.
The Greens and Communists refused to attend and the Socialists left early, claiming the venue for the address - the Chateau of Versailles, which was home to King Louis XIV - smacked of monarchy and a thirst for power.
But it was the French leader’s attack on the burka that really caused a stir.
He expressed his strong distaste for the head-to-toe Islamic veil, calling it not a sign of religion but a sign of subservience.
“It will not be welcome on French soil,” he said.” We cannot accept, in our country, women imprisoned behind a mesh, cut off from society, deprived of all identity. That is not the French republic’s idea of women’s dignity.”
