US-Israel talks in Paris aborted

A meeting between Israel’s prime minister and a senior US envoy has been cancelled amid growing differences over settlement building in the West Bank.
Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot said the US put off the meeting in response to Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to heed US demands to halt settlement activity.

Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, is meeting  Barack Obama, the US president, in Washington, for talks that could set the stage for any future developments on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.US administration officials said Obama would press Netanyahu to endorse an independent Palestinian state during Monday’s talks at the White House.

If this is any indication of the new method of approach with the Taliban perhaps the US can actually change its reputation in Afghanistan and the region.

Clinton backs Taliban dialogue



Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has said Taliban members prepared to abandon violence should be offered “an honourable form of reconciliation” in Afghanistan.
Speaking at an international conference at The Hague in the Netherlands on Tuesday, Clinton said she backed efforts by Afghanistan’s government to “separate the extremists of al-Qaeda and the Taliban from those who joined their ranks not out of conviction, but out of desperation”.
